Guides

Plain-English guides to Crown forest approvals in BC and Alberta, each with its official sources.

  • BC timber appraisals for Land Act and BCER applications

When a BC energy project cuts Crown timber, stumpage is payable to the province, worked out under the Ministry of Forests' interior or coast appraisal manual. This guide covers when an appraisal is needed, who signs it, what goes in the package, the steps from application to final billing, and the points that most often cause rework.
  • Alberta Timber Damage Assessment and salvage on dispositions

When certain approved public land dispositions in Alberta take forest out of timber use, the disposition holder pays the Government of Alberta a Timber Damage Assessment, and inside a Forest Management Agreement area the FMA holder can bill too. Separately, trees cleared for industrial use in the Green Area that meet the utilization standard must be decked and then removed within 6 months.
  • Forest reclamation to certificate in Alberta and BC

In Alberta, a reclamation certificate certifies that land disturbed by a project has been restored and the regulator's reclamation requirements have been met. In BC, energy sites on Crown land are restored under the Environmental Protection and Management Regulation.
